Private MBBS vs Government BAMS or BDS

Private MBBS vs Government BAMS or BDS: Every NEET student has a big question in their mind after the result is out “What next?” If you are not getting a government MBBS, will it be right to do a private MBBS or is government BAMS or BDS a better option?

In this article, we will do an honest and deep comparison of these three courses  in which we will see the fees, level of studies, future job prospects, salary, scope of partial drop, and which course will be best suited for whom.

Private MBBS vs Government BAMS or BDS: Fee comparison. Which one will cost you the most?

Course Fee Range (approx)

Private MBBS ₹60 lakh – ₹1.5 crore+
Government BAMS ₹10,000 – ₹80,000 per year
Government BDS ₹20,000 – ₹1 lakh per year

If you are going for private MBBS, then first understand that its fees are so high that it can become a huge financial burden for a common family. Many students sell their land, take loans for this dream, but later they realize that it is not easy to recover such a huge fee.

On the other hand, if BAMS and BDS are done from a government college, then their fees are very low. Even a middle class family can easily afford these courses, and can still make a strong career.

Private MBBS vs Government BAMS or BDS: Salary and Career Scope What will you get after the degree?

Course Starting Salary (Average) Scope & Career Prospects
Private MBBS ₹30,000 – ₹60,000/month Jobs mainly in private hospitals as Junior Doctor or House Surgeon.
Limited job security and salary initially.
Postgraduate (MD/MS/DNB) is almost essential for better opportunities.
Government jobs are rare and competitive.
BAMS (Govt) ₹30,000 – ₹50,000/month High chances of government job in AYUSH departments.
Can start private clinic or work in rural/urban government setups.
Increasing demand in integrative medicine and wellness sectors.
BDS (Govt) ₹20,000 – ₹40,000/month Fewer government jobs compared to BAMS.
Real growth often comes after setting up a private clinic or pursuing MDS.
Saturation in the private sector without specialization.

Many people believe that MBBS is everything, but the truth is that if you have done MBBS from a private college and have not done PG, then it will not be that easy for you to get a stable job. Especially when you have not got proper exposure and patient load in studies.

The special thing for those doing BAMS is that the government is now working on a plan to train them and send them to rural areas for general practice. This opens the doors of government jobs for them.

The scope of BDS is also gradually increasing, but there is still not much job market in it, unless you open your own clinic or do MDS

Under what circumstances should you choose which course?

✅ Do private MBBS when…

Your family has its own hospital or nursing home. In such a situation, after doing MBBS, you can directly take over that setup.

There is no tension financially – if you have a budget of more than ₹ 1 crore and have the ability to do PG from private.

You can invest by thinking for the long term, without expecting that you will get a huge salary in the beginning.

❌ Avoid private MBBS when…

You have to take a loan, or have to sell land/jewellery.

All the savings of the family have to be spent on this one admission.

You think that after doing MBBS, you will immediately get a job worth lakhs this does not happen.

✅ Do BAMS when…

You want a job quickly, and want to go into the government sector.

You are interested in Sanskrit and Ayurveda, and believe in traditional medicine instead of allopathy.

You do not have enough resources to afford private MBBS or long studies.

✅ Do BDS when…

You are interested in dental science and you are dedicated to opening a clinic.

You have a business mind and networking ability so that you can earn good income by running a clinic.

You are also ready to do MDS which will increase the scope.

Partial Drop: Where is it safe to ride two boats?

Which course is better for a partial drop? Reasons

Private MBBS:  No, not possible due to high fees and bond
BAMS (Govt):  Yes, low fees, most colleges do not have bond
BDS (Govt):  Maybe some colleges have bond, check is necessary

If you want to prepare for NEET 2026 for another year, but also want to continue some course, then BAMS is the best option.

Because:

Fees are low, and attendance is not that strict.

Most colleges do not have bond.

You can balance both studies and preparation.

On the other hand, this is not possible in private MBBS because once you take admission, a huge fee is charged, and you cannot leave even if you want to.

Private MBBS vs Government BAMS or BDS: Level of studies how difficult, how easy?

Course Level of Studies (Difficulty) Language / Form of Study
MBBS  Very Tough
Requires strong grasp of Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology
Long hours of clinical practice
 Allopathy-based
Entirely in English Medium
Theory + Practical + Clinical
BAMS  Moderate to Tough
Includes modern science + Ayurveda
Sanskrit terms and Ayurvedic texts can be challenging
 Ayurveda-based
Mix of Sanskrit, Hindi & English
Theory + Clinical Internships
BDS  Moderate
Focused on dental anatomy, procedures, surgeries
Practical hand skills are crucial
 Dental Science-based
Mostly in English Medium
Scientific + Clinical Training

Both MBBS and BDS are science based fields, in which in-depth subjects like physiology, anatomy, and pharmacology are taught.

In BAMS, you have to study Sanskrit along with the concepts of Ayurveda, which can confuse or demotivate some students

Conclusion: What to do? And what not to do?

Your situation is the right choice for you No worries about budget, can choose private MBBS
Need a job soon, BAMS will be best in low cost
Interested in the dental field, want to open a clinic, try BDS
or try again for NEET for one year BAMS + partial drop with an ideal plan
